Pioneer of the SMART Surgery Technique, Dr. David B. Samadi

Dr. David Samadi has become one of the greatest prostate surgeons through a strong dedication to cutting edge and effective treatments for prostate cancer. He has performed over 7000 robotic prostate surgeries using the SMART surgery technique with the da Vinci robotic system. The SMART (Samadi Modified Advanced Robotic Technique) surgery technique creates a classic open anatomic RRP technique on a robotic platform. This technique uses a series of robotic tools to allow better vision and angles than can be achieved with classic open or straight laparoscopic instruments. Dr. David Samadi is a huge advocate for the early dedication of prostate cancer. It used to be thought that only men over 60 were at risk but Dr. David Samadi says that is no longer true and getting tested early can have vast benefits for the patient’s long term health.

Dr. David Samadi was born in Iran where he grew up in a Persian Jewish community. When he was only 15 he forced to leave Iran along with his brother and go to Belgium due to the Revolution in 1979. The two brothers had to start a new life separated from their family and through many struggles eventually made their way to America. Dr. David Samadi completed high school in Roslyn, New York. He then went on to attend the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he earned his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. Dr. David Samadi followed this by gaining a master’s degree from Stony Brook School of Medicine before completing his medical training in urology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1996 and Montefiore Medical Center in 2000. He then accomplished a robotic radical prostatectomy fellowship at Henri Mondor Hospital Creteil in Paris. Eventually, he was named Chief of Division of Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery in the Department of Urology at Mount Sinai and is now Vice Chair of the Department of Urology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center.
