Dr. David Samadi Creating Awareness about Prostate Cancer

Part of being a urologist is creating awareness about urological diseases and the available treatment options, a role Dr. David Samadi has gracefully embraced. Dr. Samadi is a board-certified urologist based at Lenox Hill Hospital.

As he is used to, Dr. Samadi recently shared his professional insights about prostate cancer and the use of surgery vis-à-vis radiation therapy to treat the disease. The article is available here. Dr. Samadi is of the view that surgery has proven to be more effective than radiation therapy at treating localized prostate cancer. Dr. Samadi’s stance is similar to that of Canadian researchers, who concluded that localized prostate cancer is best treated with surgery.

Radiation therapy does not only breed the development of secondary cancers but also elevate the chances of a patient succumbing to prostate cancer, according to Dr. Samadi. Secondary cancers are those of the bladder and the rectum, which occur as a result of intensive radiotherapy sessions. Regarding the increased chances of succumbing to prostate cancer, Dr. Samadi emphasizes that men treated with radiation therapy are up to two times likely to die from prostate cancer sooner than those whose prostates are surgically removed.

Owing to the complexity of prostate cancer surgery, Dr. Samadi stresses the need for a skilled urologistoncologist, who has successfully performed numerous surgeries. An experienced urologist is likely not to overlook critical issues that may lead to loss of urinary continence or sexual function.
